There are the estuary of the Tmaka and western part of Tver Kremlin:
Sobornaya Sq. and the beginning of Millionnaya St. (today the Revolution Sq. and
Sovietskaya St.).
Nyt remains of defence constructions were finally dyg away in the last quarter
of the XIX century and Tver Kremlin became visually intangible. A citizen no
longer could enter the fortess though the gates or walk along the fort-ess wall.
None the less the Kremlin's focus - the Cathedral of the Transfiguration
(1689-1696) - continued to be the symbol of Tver and the basic town-planning
link in the round about building. The significance of the Cathedral complex was
strengthen by the bell-tower erected in 1736-1753. Both the two buildings were
destroyed in 1930s.
To the North of the Cathedral one can see the cupolas of the Emperor's
Travelling Palace, built in 1760-1770s in the place where the chambers of Tver
archbishop stood. Now the building belongs to Tver Picture Gallery.
Commercial Women's College (1905) is in the centre of the photo. Today this is
Gymnasia N°6.
On the right there is Classic Men's Gymnasia (1839-1859). In 1954 the medical
Institute was opened there (now - The Tver State Medical Academy).
The extreme left in photo is Churhe of St. Nikola «in the Kapustnicki». It's
difficult to say when this additional name was fixed to the temple but we meet
it on the pages of the XVIII century. That stone temple was built in 1660-1670s
under the initiative of Tver arhibishop Iosaf. In the middle of The XVIII
century the Church of St. Nikola was rebuilt. The five- cupolas building with
the separated bell-tower was changed to one-cupola temple of another type. The
church was pulled down in 1954.
